Culture Lounge

We have an international exchange facility called the “Culture Lounge”. It is on the second floor of the Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences in building No.1 and it’s a place for students to communicate with both Japanese and other international students or study other languages independently.

It is also a student-centered place in which students learn naturally from each other in a natural and relaxed environment.

We offer 4 spaces to promote independent learning of students who are interested in international exchange and cross-cultural communication.

To talk about how to study foreign languages and get advice on studying abroad or life in Japan

Courses and Seminars

Exchange students are required to register for at least 10 hours (7 courses) per week.
We offer the following:

◆Japanese Language Education offered by Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences, Institute of Liberal arts and sciences and International Center.

◆Syllabuses of the Faculty of IAS offered by the Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences.
Some are accessible in English for English speaking exchange students with limited skills in Japanese language. And some are courses chosen by former exchange students which are extracted from over one thousand syllabuses in the Faculty of IAS.

Some are accessible in English for English speaking exchange students with limited skills in Japanese language. And some are courses chosen by former exchange students extracted from over seven hundred syllabuses in the Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Club Activities

To make students life enjoyable, bring up a Japanese healthy mind and body, expand perspectives, and acquire enriching experiences, participation in club activities are recommended.

There are many forms of entertainments and displays from clubs at University festival every year in November.
To join a club, students are recommended to contact the club directly.

Admission Requirements (Language requirements)
Japanese language proficiency to be able to take lectures and tests in Japanese without translation.
JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) Level 3 (N3) or higher is desirable.
If applicants do not have a JLPT certificate, supporting documents to prove their Japanese proficiency (being equivalent to or higher than N3) will be required.

【Graduate School Students Only】
If your Study abroad at Tokushima University is mainly for research purpose, please submit “Schedule Form of the Study” with your application documents.
Also we request you to submit “Status Report of the Study” every month during your study abroad in Tokushima.
When your study abroad at Tokushima University is concluded, please submit “Report of the Study”.

We offer the ICP (International Culture Program) and Japanese Language Education for students whose Japanese level is lower than N3 to improve their Japanese level in their first semester.

We provide the above courses except “Everyday Japanese Course” for exchange students.

Privately Financed International Students Program

This program is for undergraduate students as a regular (matriculated) admission and for those who attend classes every weekday with a degree granted at the end of the course.

International students are usually admitted in April, while special students are admitted on request.

Please understand that the majority of classes and lectures are conducted entirely in Japanese. Thus, it is necessary for international students to achieve a proper level of Japanese before admission.

The duration of education is generally 4 years and Bachelor’s degree is granted upon completion of the program required.

Application Requirements

International applicants must meet the conditions below:

  1. Applicants must not possess Japanese nationality and not have permission for permanent residence from the Japanese Government.
  2. Applicants must meet one of the following conditions:
    A. Must have completed 12 years of school education abroad before or by the end of March in the year of admission, or the equivalent of such education as recognized by the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture,
    B. Must possess an International Baccalaureate Diploma recognized by the civil code of Switzerland, and must be at least eighteen years of age on March 31st of the year of the examination, and/or possess Abitur Zertifikat, a University entrance qualification based on each state of the Federal Republic of Germany, or the Baccalaureate Diploma recognized by the Republic of France as university entrance qualification and must be at least eighteen years of age on March 31st of the year of the examination.
  3. Applicants must take the subjects assigned by the university / department in EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students) by March 31st of the year of the examination, and must understand Japanese.

Research Students Program

This program is for students who seek to conduct their research for specific themes under the guidance of academic advisors.
There is no credit offered in this program.

Qualification Requirements
Those who have graduated from junior colleges, or are confirmed as having achieved academic standards equivalent to those of junior college graduates.
Applicants who have not achieved the above academic standards are required to conduct a qualification screening.

Credited Auditors Program

This program is for students who seek to take course(s) of the Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences. At the end of course(s) students achieve credits after passing examination(s).
Achieved credits will be certified as Bachelor’s credit in some cases.

Those who have achieved academic standards to complete academic courses.

Summer School Program

Summer School Program in the Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences
The aim of this program is for students who have studied Japanese and are in the first year at their home university. This program fosters knowledge, skills and motivation through communication in Japanese which will also be preparation for studying abroad in the future.
Also, through activities in this program, all students will gain a deeper understanding of the significance of maintaining an international vision and the importance of studying abroad through interaction and cultural exchange between students.

Goals
Improving reading skills in Japanese
Enhancing communication ability in Japanese
Gaining presentation skills in Japanese

Activities
Lecture: “Global Communication- Volunteer experience in Local community”
Excursion for deepening understandings of Japanese culture and experiencing Japanese wilderness
