●Why did you want to study abroad in Japan?／なぜ日本に留学しようと思ったのですか。
I’ve always had an interest in Japan since childhood. It started with Japanese traditional music like the Shamisen and Koto, which led me into reading about Japanese culture and history, and I especially fell for Japan’s culture and its heritage. It made me want to be part of its culture, and the best way to partake in its culture was to speak the language, which is why I’m majoring in Japanese linguistics and why I decided to study abroad.
子供のころから日本に興味がありました。三味線や琴の日本の伝統的な音楽から始まり、日本文化や歴史について読むようになりました。特に、日本文化や遺産について魅了されました。その文化の一部になりたいと思い、その文化に触れる一番の方法はその言語を話すことでした。だから日本語言語学を専攻して留学を決めました。
●Why did you choose Tokushima University for your studying abroad? / 徳島大学を選んだ理由は何ですか。
There are a lot of Japanese exchange students who study at Lund University every year, and some of them come from Tokushima University. During the exchange year of the Japanese students from Tokushima, I got to befriend some of them and make meaningful connections. This, paired with the fact that I’m not a big fan of big crowded cities like Tokyo or Osaka and I really like to be close to nature, made me choose to study at Tokushima University.
毎年、ルンド大学にはたくさんの日本人の交換留学生がいて、徳島大学からの学生もいます。徳島大学からの日本人学生の留学期間中、彼らの数人と親しくなり有意義な友人関係を築きました。これに加えて私は東京や大阪などの混雑した大都市が好きではなく自然に近いところに居たかったので徳島大学での留学を選びました。
●What subjects have you been studying in your home university?／自国ではなにを勉強していましたか。
At Lund University I was studying Japanese linguistics.
ルンド大学では、日本言語学を勉強していました。
●How did you prepare for studying in Japan?／日本留学に向けてどのような勉強をしましたか。
I didn’t prepare anything in particular. I just studied some extra vocabulary and sentence structures in Japanese. I also made sure to pack light because I know I would buy a lot of souvenirs and stuff during my stay in Japan.
特別な準備はしませんでした。日本語の単語や文法を追加で勉強したくらいです。また、日本に滞在中は沢山のお土産や物を買うと思ったので荷造りは軽めにしました。
●How was your experience in Tokushima? For example, was there anything that surprised you? / 徳島に来てどうでしたか。例えば、驚いたことはありますか。
I really enjoyed my time in Tokushima, I got to meet and make a lot of friends and had so many new experiences. I was a little bit taken aback at how hard it was to interact and make meaningful conversations and friends at first. Compared to Tokyo, where people were a lot easier to talk to, the people here in Tokushima felt a bit more closed off and hard to approach, but it didn’t take long to get used to it and start making friends.
徳島での時間は本当に楽しめました。沢山の友達ができ沢山の新しい経験ができました。最初は交流したり有意義な会話をしたりするのがこんなに大変なのかと少し困惑しました。話しやすい東京に人々と比べると、徳島の人は少し閉鎖的で近寄りがたい感じがしましたが、すぐに慣れて友人作りを始めることができました。
●Have you used the Culture Lounge while you are in TU? How did you like using Culture Lounge? / 徳島大学ではカルチャー・ラウンジは利用しましたか。また、利用してどうでしたか。
I did use the culture lounge mainly because it was so empty, and i could get some studying in between classes or just play games with some friends.
いつもすごく空いていたので主に使用していました。授業の合間に勉強したり友達とゲームをしたりしました。
●How was your learning experience with courses at TU?／徳島大学での勉強（受講）はどうでしたか。
I really liked the English courses because they were engaging, and the teachers were wonderful and fun to talk to and very helpful. The Japanese courses were challenging but not too hard to the point I didn’t know what was going on. But I didn’t feel like they quite fitted my personal needs to better my Japanese. Most likely due to differences in prioritization and expected skill levels. Nonetheless, I feel like this was a valuable opportunity, and I got a lot out of it.
英語の授業がすごく良かったです。なぜなら魅力的で先生方は素晴らしく話が面白くてとても親切でした。日本語の授業は挑戦でしたが、内容が分からないほど難しくはなかった。自分が日本語の向上に求めているものには合わなかったように思いました。優先順位と期待しているレベルの違いによるものだと思います。とは言え、これは貴重な機会で、多くのことを得ることがきたと感じています。
●Are there any big differences with student life in Tokushima and the country where your university is? / 学生生活について、日本と自国では大きな違いがありますか。
The biggest difference has to do with the school clubs and circles, in Sweden we don’t have any school clubs like they do in Japan. You usually need to go and find a private establishment with expensive fees. In Lund we also have something called “Nations”, which are student organizations that host events like dinners, parties, balls, nightclubs and more. This was something that sadly was missing for me, as it made it a lot harder to meet new people and get to know them.
一番大きな違いは部活動やサークルをすることです。スウェーデンには日本のような部活動がありません。たいてい高額な私立施設を見つけないといけません。ルンド大学では「Nation」と呼ばれる学生団体があり、夕食、パーティー、舞踏会、ナイトクラブなどのイベントを主催しています。これは残念ながら私にとって欠けていたことで新しい人と知り合うのがより難しくなりました。
●What experience gave you strongest impact during your stay in Japan or in Tokushima? / 日本（徳島）での生活で一番印象深いものは何ですか。
The best experience I had was joining the Tokushima University’s judo team. It was probably the most authentic and precious memory from Japan. Having the opportunity to study a traditional Japanese martial art and making so many close friends through it is an experience I’d never trade away for anything. This also led me to continue judo in Sweden, where I left off in Japan. I’d truly recommend the judo club to anyone seeking to make friends, a club to connect with or to experience Japanese culture.
一番の経験は徳島大学で柔道部に参加したことです。おそらく日本での最も本物で貴重な思い出です。伝統的な日本武道を学ぶ機会とたくさんの親友は他のものには代えられない経験です。日本で中断した柔道はスウェーデンで継続します。友達を作りたい方、交流のあるクラブを探している方、また日本文化を経験したい方に柔道部は本当におすすめです。
●What is your goal in the future?／将来の目標は何ですか。
My goal as it stands now is to continue practicing Japanese, not to the same extent as before but on the side. I also wish to continue my judo journey and hope to one day have a match with them again. I hope to also one day reconnect with the friends I made in Japan and visit Japan and explore the places I’ve yet to visit and also show Sweden to my friends.
私の現在の目標は以前ほどではないが、日本語の練習を続けることです。また、柔道を続けていつか彼らと再び対戦したいです。日本の友達と連絡を取って日本を訪れまだ行ったことのない場所を探検したりスウェーデンを友達に紹介したりもしたいです。
●Could you leave advice to students who want to study abroad from Tokushima or thinking of studying in Tokushima from your home school? / 留学を考えている学生に向けてアドバイスをお願いします。
If you’re going to study in Tokushima, don’t wait for the perfect opportunity, because it won’t come unless you put yourself out there, and all the small stuff will quickly add up and become something big. You won’t make friends by waiting for others to approach you, and they will likely not unless you present yourself. Don’t sit there saying you don’t have any friends if you don’t even try. Go out there and join a club. It will make your student life so much more enjoyable and fun. There is so much to do if you just give it a chance. There aren’t just sports clubs, there are so many other types of clubs to join, give them a chance! I’d highly recommend the Judo Club and the Scuba Diving Club.
If you’re a student from Tokushima who wants to study abroad, start with interacting with the exchange students already on the campus. There are lots of opportunities to interact with them, and they could help in choosing where to go, what to expect studying abroad or just practicing speaking English. This is also a great opportunity to make new friends and make international connections before even setting foot outside of Japan!
もし徳島大学で学ぶ予定なら完璧な機会は待たない方が良いです。なぜならあなた自身が行動を起さないとやってきません。小さな積み重ねが大きなことになっていきます。他の人が来てくれるのを待っていても友達はできません。自分自身で行動しないと誰もしないと思います。行動を起こさずに友達がいないと言わないようにしましょう。外に出て部活動に参加してみてください。あなたの学生生活をずっと楽しく良いものにしてくれるでしょう。チャンスがあればできることが沢山あります。スポーツのクラブだけではなく、他にもたくさんの参加できるクラブがあります。試してください！柔道部とスキューバダイビング部はすごくおすすめです。
徳島大学の学生でからこれから留学予定の方はキャンパスに来ている交換留学生と交流することを始めてください。留学生と交流する機会はたくさんあり、留学先の選択や留学中の予想、英語を話す練習に役立ちます。日本を出発する前から新しい友人作りや国際的なつながりを持つ素晴らしい機会にもなります。
