●Why did you want to study abroad in Japan?／なぜ日本に留学しようと思ったのですか。
My major is in Japanese linguistics, and ever since I started the program, the goal was always to study and live in Japan for a year. It is a chance not a lot of people get, so I wanted to make sure I made the most of it.
私の専攻は日本語学で、プログラムを始めたときから1年間日本で住み勉強することが目標でした。なかなかないチャンスなので、最大限に活かしたいと思いました。
●Why did you choose Tokushima University for your studying abroad? / 徳島大学を選んだ理由は何ですか。
I met multiple exchange students from Tokushima University in Lund, and they were always really kind and welcoming, so good friends are part of why I wanted to go. Secondly, I lived in Tokyo for a summer in 2023, and this time I wanted to experience something different from the big cities of Japan. Lastly, Tokushima university had the reputation that they were a lot more allowing of their exchange students to choose their own courses compared to other bigger universities, so that was also a big factor. I was also under the impression that I would have to use Japanese a lot more in a city like Tokushima, which also turned out to be true.
ルンド大学で徳島大学からの交換留学生に何人も会いました。彼らはいつも親切で歓迎してくれました。だから良い友人の存在が行きたかった理由の1つになります。２つ目に、私は2023年の夏に東京に住んでいたので今回は日本の都会とは違った経験をしたかったからです。最後に、徳島大学は他の大きな大学と比べて、交換留学生が自分でコースの選択ができると評判があったのでそれも大きな要因でした。また、徳島では日本語をもっと使わないといけないという印象がありましたが、実際本当でした。
●What subjects have you been studying in your home university?／自国ではなにを勉強していましたか。
My major was in Japanese linguistics, but we mainly studied the language. I also studied a semester of Japanese history before even starting studying the language.
私の専攻は日本語学でしたが、主に言語を勉強しました。また、言語を勉強し始める前に日本の歴史を1学期間勉強しました。
●How did you prepare for studying in Japan?／日本留学に向けてどのような準備をしましたか。
Since I had already been to Japan multiple times, I knew what to expect and therefore I did nothing special. I just made sure the paperwork was filled out in time and made sure I stayed on top of the rest of my preparations.
既に日本には何回か来ていて何が必要かは知っていたので、特別なことはしませんでした。書類の手続きには期日通りに行い、残りの準備も怠らないようにしました。
●How was your experience in Tokushima? For example, was there anything that surprised you? / 徳島に来てどうでしたか。例えば、驚いたことはありますか。
My experience in Tokushima was overall a very good one. Our accommodation was great, the bikes we were lent by the university saved us a lot of money on bus fares, and the campus was great as well. Talking to other students were challenging at times, even though we spoke Japanese, but we made the best we could out of the situation, and 9 times out of 10, it turned out great. If there was anything we needed help with, we could always go to the international office or the like and get help. There wasn’t really anything that surprised me really, but I guess one thing I hadn’t expected was how difficult it was to make friends at the university. Luckily, I joined a club and did some extracurricular work, and met some great friends that way, but from actual lessons it was a very rare occasion.
徳島での経験は全体的にとても良かったです。寮がすばらしく、大学から貸してもらった自転車でバス代を節約できました。また学内も良かったです。日本語を話しても他の学生と話すことが難しいときがありましたが、10回中9回は良い結果を出せました。助けが必要な時は国際課に行き助けてもらいました。特に驚いたことはありませんでしたが、大学で友達を作るのがこんなに難しいかということは予想外でした。幸い、課外活動に参加したので、そこで素晴らしい友人ができました。でも授業では非常にまれだったと思います。
●Have you used the Culture Lounge while you are in TU? How did you like using Culture Lounge? / 徳島大学ではカルチャー・ラウンジは利用しましたか。また、利用してどうでしたか。
I think I was there maybe one or two times, but just hastily with some friends while waiting for lessons to start. To be honest, the room was nice, but the ventilation wasn’t that great, nor was the Wi-Fi.
１回か2回ほど利用しました。でも授業が始まる前に友達と少し立ち寄っただけです。正直、部屋はきれいですが、換気があまり良くなく、Wi-Fiも良くなかったです。
●How was your learning experience with courses at TU?／徳島大学での勉強（受講）はどうでしたか。
Overall, it was a good learning experience, but pretty different from back home in Sweden. Having to take so many vastly different courses and subjects made it feel like I was back in high school again, but it was an alright change of pace. The teachers were mostly really good and very helpful, and I was sad when I had to part with some of them. The levels of homework wasn’t overwhelming in the slightest, so we had lots of time to explore Tokushima, and actually experience life in Japan, which I enjoyed.
全体的に良い勉強になりましたが、スウェーデンとはかなり違いました。多くの異なる科目を取らなければいけないので、高校時代に戻ったようでしたが、気分転換になりました。先生方はほとんどがとても良くて親切でした。別れるとき悲しかったです。宿題の量はそれほど多くなかったので、徳島を探索する時間が沢山あり、日本の生活体験を楽しめました。
●Are there any big differences with student life in Tokushima and the country where your university is? / 学生生活について、日本と自国では大きな違いがありますか。
Yes, there were quite a lot of differences. Firstly, like I said previously, taking that made different courses felt like high school all over again. In Sweden, everyone in the same program take the same courses, and that way it’s very easy to make good friends, which I felt was missing from the classes in Tokushima. Very rarely did you have class with the same people multiple times a week (except for us exchange students). In Lund there isn’t just one or two campuses either, so having all the students at one campus was a very strange, but fun experience. It generally seems like student life is centered around after school activities and clubs, which isn’t the case at all back home. I wish we had something similar though, as it is a great way to make friends with people with similar interests at the university.
はい、違いはたくさんあります。最初に先ほど述べたように、様々な科目を履修することは高校時代に戻ったようでした。スウェーデンでは、同じプログラムの人はみんな同じコースを取ります。だから友人を作るのもとても簡単ですが、徳島大学での授業ではそれがなかったです。1週間のうちで交換留学生を除いて、何度も同じ人と授業を受けることはほとんどありませんでした。ルンド大学はキャンパスが12つしかないわけではないので、全学生が1つのキャンパスに集まるのは不思議でしたが楽しい経験でした。一般的に学生生活は放課後の課外活動が中心に回っているようでしたが、母国では全く異なります。大学で同じ興味を持っている人と友達になる素晴らしい方法なので、何か同じようなものがあれば良いなと思います。
●What experience gave you strongest impact during your stay in Japan or in Tokushima? / 日本（徳島）での生活で一番印象深いものは何ですか。
The experience that had the strongest impact during my stay was without a doubt joining the Judo club and getting to train judo. Not only was it a lot of fun and good training but getting to participate in something so quintessentially Japanese in Japan was a great experience. Me and the friend I trained with were welcomed with open arms, and everyone in the team took great care of us. We got to experience things and meet people we never would have otherwise, and it really enriched my experience in Japan. While others we knew struggled somewhat to meet Japanese people, the judo club gave that opportunity to us, and our Japanese benefited greatly from it.
私の留学の中で一番印象深い経験は、間違いなく柔道部に参加して柔道の練習をしたことです。とても楽しく、良いトレーニングになっただけでなく、日本の真髄に触れることができたのは素晴らしい経験でした。私と友人は歓迎してくれてみんなとても気遣ってくれました。他ではなかなかできない経験をして人々にも会うことができ、日本の経験を豊なものにしてくれました。知り合いが日本人と知り合うのに苦労している中で柔道部はその機会を与えてくれて日本語もすごく上達しました。
●What is your goal in the future?／将来の目標は何ですか。
My goal right now is to complete my master’s degree in Asian studies, and after that we will see.
今の目標は、アジア研究で修士号を取得することです。
●Could you leave advice to students who want to study abroad from Tokushima or thinking of studying in Tokushima from your home school? / 留学を考えている学生に向けてアドバイスをお願いします。
I’d say the most important thing is to join a club, since that is the best way of meeting new people, making friends and getting better at Japanese, all while doing something fun. Specifically I’d love for others from my school to try training judo (wink wink), but joining any club, partaking in their activities and maybe even taking on responsibilities in the club is my best advice.
部活に参加することが一番重要と言いたいです。楽しみながら新しい人との出会い、友達作りや日本語の上達に一番の方法です。特に自分の大学からくる他の学生にも柔道をしてほしいと思います(wink wink)。でも、どのクラブに参加するにしても、その活動に参加して、部活での責任を引き受けることが一番のアドバイスです。
